Dark Arisen explained
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is the expanded first game; Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is the sequel's 2026 expansion and complete-edition name. Check the number 2 and whether the product says Expansion before purchasing.
This guide covers the 2026 expansion for Dragon's Dogma 2. Compare it with the 2013 Dark Arisen game.
Two products, one subtitle
| Name | What it is |
|---|---|
| Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen | The 2013 expanded release of the first game. |
| Dragon's Dogma 2 | The 2024 sequel. Steam lists 21 March 2024. |
| Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen | The 2026 expansion. Steam US lists 8 October 2026. |
Why Capcom reused the name
In the 31 July 2026 Q&A, as carried in Capcom's Steam news, the producers gave three reasons: the subtitle fits the Norgan story, the expedition loop resembles the 2013 Dark Arisen loop, and returning players already know what that subtitle promises.
The structure is not a copy. The 2013 relic loop sat in the single dungeon Bitterblack Isle. The 2026 Q&A says Relic Appraisal happens on Norgan's open map. The 2013 release also reworked the base game. In 2026 those base-game changes arrived as Title Update 4.0 instead of a new full release.
Questions
Is Dragon's Dogma 2 the same as Dark Arisen?
No. Dragon's Dogma 2 is the 2024 game. Dark Arisen on that game is the 2026 expansion. The 2013 Dark Arisen is the first game.
Should I play the 2013 version before the sequel?
You do not need it to start Dragon's Dogma 2. The comparison page lists the public differences without telling you which purchase to make.
