The Caged Magistrate
Waldhar will only leave prison after you find him a library. Complete The Heel of History beneath the Gracious Hand, tell him about the vaults, then escort him out using Brant's Gaol Key.
Key, library, and escape
- During Seat of the Sovran, meet Brant at the Stardrop Inn at night and ask about the magistrate. Take the Gaol Key; Monster Culling is not a mandatory separate prerequisite.
- Enter the castle gaol and identify Waldhar in his cell. The exact left/right cell description depends on which entrance you used. Speak to him and urge him to escape.
- In the slums, donate food and gold to Kendrick outside the Gracious Hand. Accept The Heel of History and speak to the three children in and around the building about Malcolm.
- Report to Kendrick, follow him into the ruined tower, and find Malcolm underground. Follow Malcolm to the archive full of books.
- Return to Waldhar and tell him about the Gracious Hand's vaults. Open his cell and lead him through the lower exit toward the slums, keeping him close.
- After the escape scene, report to Brant at the inn at night and return his key to finish.
Rewards and restricted areas
The older guides record a Ferrystone and 7,000 G; Fextralife also lists 1,200 XP. Capcom increased some quest rewards on June 10, 2026, so these figures are historical references rather than current guaranteed payouts.
A guard disguise can help in restricted castle areas, but avoid attacking guards or assuming every entrance gives the same reception. Waldhar's requirement is the archive, not simply unlocking his cell.
