Grimoires and quest books
A grimoire casts a spell once when read, even by a non-caster. Some of those same books are quest valuables: do not consume originals needed by Trysha in Spellbound or Myrddin in The Sorcerer's Appraisal.

Chest contents were among the items adjusted in June 2026, so use chest entries as documented leads rather than guaranteed current loot. NPC sources and spell effects are attributed to the linked guides.
Originals versus forgeries
Spellbound and The Sorcerer's Appraisal request overlapping books. Preserve genuine copies for Trysha; Myrddin can accept forgeries, allowing both questlines to be planned without consuming the originals as combat spells.
Imitations have altered names, such as Fruminous Shield instead of Fulminous Shield, and do not inherit the genuine spell. Check the exact inventory name before handing over or reading a book.
A maister teaching tome, such as the Magick Archer's Martyr's Bolt teaching item, and a pawn-specialization tome are not the same category as a one-use spell grimoire. Their descriptions identify what is learned.
Questions
Can a Fighter use a grimoire?
Yes. Spell grimoires can be read by characters who cannot normally cast that spell.
Is a grimoire unrelated to quests?
No. Several spell books are also required quest valuables. Save originals for the appropriate hand-in.
